IAAF WIC SOPOT 2014 - First 2014 world indoor golds go to Whiting and Broerse

08.03.2014

Day One review: Try as he might – and the trying is always mighty with him – Tomasz Majewski could not produce a medal-winning performance for the home crowd in the Shot Put, where he was knocked out of bronze position by the last throw from New Zealand’s Tomas Walsh in a final won with 22.05m by defending champion Ryan Whiting, who extended the United States’ winning run in this event to six. The Ergo Arena crowd did all they could to lift their Olympic champion, who won bronze at the last two World Indoor Championships. But a fourth round season’s best of 21.04 which established him in a podium position was eventually eclipsed by an Area record of 21.26 from Walsh. Germany’s double world outdoor champion David Storl took silver with a season’s best of 21.79. Georgi Ivanov of Bulgaria also had a night to remember as he finished fifth with a national record of 21.02.
Nadine Broersen of the Netherlands took the first gold medal of these Championships in the Pentathlon after maintaining the big morning lead she had established with a season’s best of 6.17m in the Long Jump followed by an 800m personal best of 2:14.97. Although she only finished sixth in the concluding event, her final total of 4830 points, the best seen in 2014, left her 62 points clear of world outdoor silver medallist Brianne Theisen Eaton. The Canadian’s 4768 performance was a national record, and bronze medallist Alina Fodorova of Ukraine, whose personal
best total of 4724 saw her finish just six points clear of Sharon Day-Monroe of the United States, whose personal best time of 2:09.80 won her the race, but not a medal. Fodorova’s achievement helped balance Ukrainian disappointment that their world outdoor champion, Ganna Melnichenko, could only finish seventh with 4587. Personal bests of 8.43 in the opening 60m Hurdles and 1.93 in the High Jump – a national record – put Broersen in a commanding position which she consolidated with a 14.59 shot put which left her 114 points clear at the end of the morning session.
Australia’s Olympic champion Sally Pearson made it clear just how badly she wants to retain her World Indoor 60m Hurdles title after recovering from the injuries which lessened her competitive edge last year as she equalled her 2014 world leading performance of 7.79sec in winning her first round heat.
Richard Kilty of Britain was fastest qualifier for today’s 60m semi-finals with a personal best of 6.53, with team-mate Dwain Chambers and Lucas Jakubczyk of Germany next best on 6.57. Favourite Marvin Bracy of the United States ran a relatively conservative 6.60.
Adrian Strzalkowski produced a Polish record of 8.18m to head the Long Jump qualifiers, of whom the last was Mexico’s Luis Rivera with a national record of 8.01, but Russia’s world champion Aleksandr Menkov, who jumped 8.04, will be lurking in tonight’s final.
Earlier in the day, Majewski’s team-mates Angelika Cichocka and Adam Kszczot  generated some early excitement in their respective 800m competitions. Cichocka produced a 2014 world-leading time of 2:00.37 in her opening heat, while Kszczot, the double European champion, was fastest in the first round with 1:45.76.
Bernard Lagat, oldest men’s World Indoor champion two years ago when he won the 3000m aged 37, will have the chance to repeat the trick at 39 after qualifying for Sunday’s final.
Day Two preview:
Marvin Bracy of the United States is the favourite to win the 60m gold tonight, but he produced a relatively sedate performance of 6.60 to reach the semi-finals, where fastest qualifiers are Richard Kilty, with a personal best of 6.53, his experienced British team-mate Dwain Chambers and Lucas Jakubczyk of Germany, who both clocked 6.57.
The women’s 60m sees a potentially riveting domestic rivalry get underway as Jamaica’s double Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce makes her World Indoor debut against a field which includes compatriot Veronica Campbell Brown, the double Olympic 200m champion who is due to return to racing after a 10-months absence following the overturning of a doping ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Australia’s Olympic champion Sally Pearson will seek to restore her No.1 position in the 60m Hurdles today after qualifying for the semi-finals by equalling her 2014 world-leading performance of 7.79 in a heat where she finished 0.12sec ahead of one of her main US challengers, Nia Ali.
Watch out for European champion  Pavel Maslak of the Czech Republic and Chris Brown of the Bahamas in the men’s 400m final. The women’s 400m gold looks like going to either Francena McCorory of the United States was fastest qualifier for Saturday’s 400m final in 51.35, with Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica Joining her after a personal best of 51.58.
Russia’s world outdoor Long Jump champion Aleksandr Menkov looks well-placed to claim another gold, while Spain’s 35-year-old Ruth Beitia is best qualifier for the High Jump final.
